The Art of Nicky Birdsall
Sketches.
The raw unfiltered ideas, rough and transient..
Mr.Kitty was the second one I did in the Steampunk Cats series. He has a lot more of the steam punk vs Victorian look than Mrs. Kitty. The articulated tail was particularly difficult and sadly lost a good bit of his detail when painted.
Inked sketch of watercolor painting Mrs. Kitty, a steam punk cat idea.
Kitty Jr. The inked sketch that became one of the watercolor series of steampunk cats. I wanted Jr. To be as gender neutral as possible. Fish/zepplin balloon was a lot of fun.
Inked but never painted, sketch from the Steam Punk Cats series of Grandpa kitty. I had a lot of fun with the hearing horn design.
Turned into a watercolor with a tropical theme. Feather Head just seemed to be the name that stuck.
Inspired by a conversation with a lovely friend about her two boys. Eventually made it into a watercolor painting but the line art was just as enjoyable.
Sketch of what became the Green Fairy painting. The inspiration was just a cute St. Patricks idea, but then I was remembering the many myths around Absinthe.
Computer sketch. Character design that evolved into something else. Has the potential to be finished someday.
Practicing rough sketches as a storyboard. I used to do comics for fun and every so often I revisit. Character study in expressions for my 'In'ei' Character.
One of my character studies done in straight photoshop. Necromancer character so I went overboard with the skull motif even if subtly. Again, a response to all the scantily clad necromancer characters out there. Personally if I was handing things like that I'd wear a hazmat suit..but miles of lace works too.
Sketch in photoshop with a waccom. Just playing around. Became one of my favorites.
